The Illustrations

Illustrations of each artist were drawn to give the zine a hand-made feel...

Initial inspiration came from artists such as: Maria Cardelli, Tanja Szekessy, Chris Ede, Victoria Ball, Nadia Hunt and Russ Mills (shown below)

Maria Adams was my greatest source of inspiration, she mixes watercolour with thick black ink lines to create pieces which are bold yet remain feminine.

Promoting the Zine

The promotion of the zine came in two forms; a gorilla marketing campaign and a online viral video campaign:

The Gorilla Marketing

A four day gorilla marketing campaign was conducted in order to place the zine in the mind of the consumer. On each of the four days poster were placed in familiar spots around the university campus. Each day a new element of the poster was revealed, leading up to information about the zine fair at Hopkinson Gallery on the 28th May.

Below are examples of the four posters that appeared each day:

Day one,           Day two,           Day three,         Day four

Online Viral Video Campaign

Social media sites are the backbone of our target demographic, we created a promotional video to be placed on facebook in order to attract consumers to the zine as well as the zine fair. The video is shown below:

Re-Branding

The branding for the zine initially looked like this, the idea was to give the zine a hand-drawn feeling. However it was decided that we needed to appear professional in order to gain the trust of the entrants.
So the branding changed into this:

Graphic Inspiration

Graphics Inspiration

The graphic design used in the zine could be hand-drawn & painted images mixed with dark lines edited on photoshop. This will give the reader an idea of the topic of the zine (fresh artistic talent), while at the same time maintaining it's professional image.

Creating our Brand Identity - Attempt One

So after establishing who we are and what we will be doing in the zine, we need to come up with a brand identity for others to recognise us by.

So we had a play around and these are the ideas we started with:

We then came up with this font and ended up with this logo:

The background is like a cream wallpaper/cartridge paper. We like this as it has a texture. We like the contrast with the electric blue too.

The actual font is BRUTALITY which gives off a hand-made feel which we wanted alongside that cool and collective feel too.

What do you think?
